Second son of Denethor, Steward of Gondor and younger brother of Boromir, Faramir cuts a tragic figure in the Lord of the Rings. Despite his fathers clear favouritism of Boromir, there is no love lost between the two brothers, and Faramir's gentle nature and love of music and lore much endeared him to Gandalf the Grey. This served only to draw more of his fathers ire, which eventually caused Denethor to send his son on a suicidal mission to retake Osgiliath.
